On Horseback Along the Borders of the Principality: An Autumn Idyl in Rila

Experience the magic of the high Balkans, where late summer colors meet history and the profound bond between man and horse.

Late summer has spilled its yellow-orange hues across the highest mountains in the Balkans. Up there, at nearly 3,000 meters, a cool September breeze hints at the arrival of autumn. In the historical area of Bela Polyana, at the foot of the Rila Mountains, one can truly absorb the seasonal idyll before the skiers arrive.

Meet the 17 graceful horses of the "Butch Brothers" ranch—creatures that respond to love, sincerity, and energy. From Martin, a veteran of the 760km "Kom-Emine" trek and a film star, to Boycho, named after the famous literary hero Boycho Ognyanov, these animals offer a journey through both nature and history.
